Sie dient in erster Linie der besseren Verbindung der westlichen Stadtteile der Stadt Frankfurt am Main sowie der umliegenden Kreise, Städte und Gemeinden miteinander und untereinander und der besseren Anbindung an den Frankfurter Flughafen. Das Projekt ist in die Planfeststellungsabschnitte PFA Nord, PFA Mitte sowie die PFA Süd I und Süd II aufgeteilt.
